Banana Town Slot Review

Banana Town is a highly volatile retro slot game from Relax Gaming with an average RTP of 96.12%. It was released in July 2022 and has a pretty epic maximum payout of 10,000x your bet value which can’t be sniffed at!

If you love retro arcade games and early console games from the 1980s and 1990s this video slot is perfect. It pays homage to the magnificent 16-bit games of the past and adds a few fun twists on typical slot game troupes including cluster pays, cascading reels, and the chance to re-trigger free spins.

You can check out the demo mode of the Banana Town slot on our site, continue to read my Banana Town review, or head straight to one of our recommended sweepstakes casinos and try your luck with this slot with free gold coins and sweeps coins!

Pros

  • Exciting cluster pays gameplay for bigger winning combinations
  • Tumbling reels feature for multiple wins from one spin
  • Multiplier feature during the base game to boost payouts
  • Maximum potential payout of 10,000x your bet value

Cons

  • Limited variety of special symbols and features
  • The free spins bonus round doesn’t trigger often
  • The buy feature is terrible value for money

About Banana Town Slot

I delve into the theme of this game below, but to give you a summary, it looks incredible and makes you feel like you are playing an arcade game from the 1980s or 1990s! Sure, it’s not a sleek and polished game, but that’s not the point – it’s meant to be gloriously retro and that’s what it does! Other important features include:

  • RTP of 96.12% (slightly above the industry average)
  • High volatility (pays infrequently but with larger payouts)
  • Developed by Relax Gaming
  • Released in July 2022
  • 6×5 reel layout
  • Cluster pays win combinations with a minimum of 8 matching symbols
  • Cascading symbols feature

I love the cluster pays feature and in this game, you don’t have to get symbols in order – instead, you just have to get a minimum of 8 of the same symbol on the board. After a winning combo, the winning symbols disappear and new ones fall in place so you can get multiple payouts from a single spin.

Relax Gaming has a range of other cluster pays and tumbling reel games in their catalog too such as Cluster Tumble Dream Drop, Fly Cats, Beellionaires, and Money Train Origins. Which are usually widely available at our recommended sweepstakes casinos.

Theme and Graphics

The best feature of the Banana Town Slot game for me is the graphics and theme. The theme revolves around a gang of ruthless monkey crimelords who are controlling the town from their epic mansion. The boss surveys his territory with a huge grin on his face while smoking a fine Cuban, and his minions stand guard at the doors. Essentially, it’s the Godfather but with monkeys and retro graphics!

And that brings me to the next part – the amazing graphics. I was raised with a Sega Mega Drive and other retro consoles so the 16-bit graphics of Banana Town Slot are incredibly nostalgic and I think it is one of the better-themed slot games available at sweepstakes casinos.

To accompany this you have an amazing 16-bit soundtrack too which makes you feel like you are playing a retro arcade or console game. I love it and the graphics and music just make the game fun to play!

Banana Town Slot RTP and Volatility

Banana Town has an OK RTP of 96.12% and is a high-volatility game. The RTP means that if you spent 1000 gold coins, on average, you would be expected to make back 96.12% of that, or 961.20 gold coins which translates to a 378 GC loss. 96.00% is the industry average for slots so Banana Town sits just above this.

A highly volatile game means that you won’t get payouts often. Instead, you will get infrequent payouts, but when you do, they are typically larger. Some people don’t like this type of gameplay and prefer low-volatility slots where you get frequent small-value payouts.

How to Play and Win

Banana Town keeps it simple in terms of how to play and win. The minimum and maximum bets are 1 GC and 100 GC respectively and there are 10 different potential symbols on the 6×5 reel grid. To get a winning combination, you must get at least 8 of the same symbol – in no particular order.

The payouts for each symbol are split into three categories – 8+, 10+, and 12+ symbols. There are also two blocks of symbols – the lower paying symbols which are a yellow, red, green, and blue banana. These all have the same lowest payout of 0.50x for 8+ symbols, while the yellow banana has a slightly higher maximum payout of 3x for 12+ symbols.

The higher-paying symbols are the five different monkey mafia characters – each with a different color background – blue, green, purple, orange, and red. The monkey mafia boss gives the highest payout multiplier of 4x for 8+ symbols, 8x for 10+ symbols, and 12x for 12+ symbols.

I like the simple game interface too – you can easily change the bet value at the bottom of the reels and there is a handy autoplay feature where you can set a pre-determined number of spins or even infinite.

Banana Town Slot Bonus Features

Compared to other slots I have played, the Banana Town slot game is relatively light on unique features or bonus symbols. Relax Gaming keeps it safe and uses several features commonly found in many titles including multipliers, free spins, and a buy feature which I describe below.

Multiplier Upgrade Feature

A cool feature that I like is the multiplier upgrades and this is present for both the standard games and free spin bonus rounds. Each symbol such as the yellow banana and blue monkey has an associated multiplier.

Each time you win with a specific symbol, the multiplier is applied and is then doubled each subsequent win up to a maximum of 64x! Due to the cluster pays gameplay and cascading reels, this can lead to some bigger payouts from your standard spins.

Free Spins Bonus Round

As with most slot games, Banana Town Slot has a bonus round where you can win free spins. This is triggered when you get 3 or more bonus symbols (the dollar sign symbol). 3 bonus symbols earn you 8 free spins, and any additional bonus symbol adds an extra free spin, therefore, the potential max you could get from one spin is 35 but that would require a full grid of bonus symbols and I doubt this has ever happened!

In most instances, you get 8 free spins which are brilliant and during my playing experience, I found this special feature triggered a decent number of times. The same paytable is used during the free spins, but any multiplier you get is persistent and stays for the entire free spins.

Also, any additional bonus symbols you get during these spins give you an extra free spin. This can lead to some hefty payouts although because the basic paytable is used, I had a few bonus round games that felt underwhelming with relatively small payouts.

Buy Feature Option (Instant Free Spins Bonus Round)

If you don’t want to wait around for the bonus game to trigger, you can immediately use the buy feature to get free spins! I always treat this type of feature with caution as it is usually expensive and in this instance, you must pay 100x your bet value.

For example, I set my bet value to 1 GC so the buy feature cost is 100 GC. On using the buy feature, the free spins bonus game activates instantly. For my 100 GC spend, I won 37.55 GC or made a 62.45 GC loss!

This is why it can be so risky – the bonus game always results in a big payout when you trigger it randomly, but when you pay 100x your bet value for it, it is essentially a game of Roulette. From testing, every time I used the buy feature with a 100 GC spend, I lost at least 65% of my gold coins so I advise avoiding this feature.

Our Experience With Banana Town Slot

To give you the low-down, I spent some time testing Banana Town and did a 250-spin playthrough with a value of 1 GC per spin and you can see the results below:

  • Spins: 250
  • Spin Value: 1.00 GC
  • Bonus Rounds Triggered: 2
  • Final Balance: 4880.00 GC
  • Effective RTP: 97.60%

As you can see, I beat the expected RTP and finished with a 96.60% return. Sure, I didn’t make any profit, but getting over the RTP was a great touch. The thing I noticed the most was the lack of bonus rounds as during my 250 spins I only triggered the free spins twice which affected the profitability.

Reasons in Favor and Against Playing Banana Town Slot Online

I LOVED playing Banana Town but it certainly isn’t a perfect video slot. The best points of this Relax Gaming slot are the retro graphics and music, the cluster pays feature, and the tumbling reels which help keep the gameplay interesting and give a potential for bigger payouts.

However, aside from that, the game keeps it safe and certainly doesn’t push the boundaries of what online slots and online casinos can achieve. The bonus round is relatively uninspiring, and aside from that, the bonus features are limited too.

Overall, the gaming experience is great, but the actual slot features could be more varied, but I still certainly recommend giving this a try at one of our sweepstakes partners for a retro gaming blast!
