Dead or Alive Slot Review

Dead or Alive is an iconic slot machine released in 2009. The game was developed by NetEnt and became so successful that it even spawned an entire Dead or Alive series with a 2019 sequel.

The original Dead or Alive slot has an RTP value of 96.82%, which places it above most modern releases in these terms. It became another massive hit for NetEnt a decade ago, and it continues to be popular to this day.

The combination of additional features and a great artistic approach are what makes Dead or Alive truly special. The machine is very intuitive, yet, multipliers and scatter symbols add a ton of replay value to it.

If you’re ready to try the classic experience right away, feel free to do so at one of the suggested casinos. Otherwise, stay tuned, as I prepared an in-depth review of the game down below.

Pros

  • Appealing visual style
  • Intuitive and beginner-friendly gameplay
  • RTP value of 96.82%
  • Maximum payout of x12,000
  • Best penny slot

Cons

  • Lack of modern advanced features
  • Outdated graphics and animations

About the Dead or Alive Slot

By looking at the demo of Dead or Alive, I assume you’ve already guessed it features a Western theme. Cheap symbols are represented with letters and numbers here, while more expensive and special symbols feature various artworks that fit the theme.

The game was developed by NetEnt, which is one of the biggest software providers in the industry. NetEnt has a portfolio of more than 200 titles released over the course of the past two decades. Aside from Dead or Alive, the provider has also released massive hits like Gonzo’s Quest, Divine Fortune, Mega Joker, and others.

Even though the game was released in 2009, NetEnt already had a ton of experience with creating amazing slot machines at that point. This enabled them to develop a slot machine with specs that are better than most modern slots. Its RTP value of 96.82% and maximum payout multiplier of x12,000 are considered higher than average even today.

Theme and Graphics

Dead or Alive has minimalist graphics, as many symbols are represented with numbers and letters. Nevertheless, it manages to build an interesting setting with its animated background and an interesting approach to sound design.

There is essentially no soundtrack in Dead or Alive, but there are many background sound effects that help create the atmosphere of the Wild West. You will hear the dogs bark, the wooden windmill creaks, and distant thunderclaps while playing. Successful combinations are also accompanied with various sound effects.

I remember being amazed by the graphics whenever the game was first released, but I have to admit they did not age perfectly well. The good news is that you can try out the sequel, if you value visuals the most.

Dead or Alive RTP and Volatility

The Return-To-Player (RTP) value of Dead or Alive is 96.82%, which represents the average returns the players get from their bets. It is a global parameter that does not have a significant effect on individual results.

The machine has a high volatility, which, in contrast, will have a direct impact on your experience. High volatility means the slot will hit rarely, but the winnings will be respectively large when it does.

How to Play and Win

The game is pretty intuitive and follows a standard 5-reel, 3-row, and 9-payline format, so if you’re at least somewhat experienced with slot machines, you can skip right to the next section.

To start playing, simply launch the game, select the bet amount in the bottom-left corner and click the green Spin button with white arrows on it.

To win, you will need to match at least three symbols of the same kind on one of the nine paylines the game supports.

Dead or Alive offers wild symbols, which are used as a substitute for any other symbol in a combination. For example, on the screenshot below, I landed two whiskey glasses on the third line and a wild symbol between them, so the combination still worked.

Dead or Alive Wild Symbol

Different types of symbols have different rarity and grant different payouts. Also, matching four or five symbols of the same kind will yield you a larger payout than matching three of them. I’m attaching a payout table for bets worth 0.9 coins, but you can also view it in-game for your specific bet.

Dead or Alive Slot Bonus Features

The video game is not jam-packed with additional features, but there are still some mechanics to play with. I’ll explain all of them in separate sections to keep things intuitive.

Wild Symbols

Wild symbols are used to substitute any other symbols in a winning combination. When you land two symbols of the same kind and a wild symbol on the same payline, the game will count it as a combination of three symbols.

The same applies even if there are already three of four symbols next to the wild. It will become the fourth or the fifth symbol in the combination respectively. It is also possible to have two wilds on the same payline – they will match with the highest-paying symbol on the payline.

On top of that, you can make combinations of wilds without any regular symbols.

Scatter Symbols

Scatter symbols are the ones you don’t have to match. It is enough to simply land from two to five of them on the grid in order for them to count as a winning combination. The idea is pretty simple, and the payout is great. You get 2x your stake even for two Dead or Alive scatters.

Free Spin Rounds

Free spin rounds are triggered when you land at least three scatter symbols on the grid. Doing so will yield you twelve free spins, and all combinations made with them will pay double the normal amount.

In case you’re lucky enough to land three more scatters during your free spins, you will get twelve additional free rounds on top of those you already have. This can only happen once per a free spin session.

Sticky Wilds

Sticky wilds are a special addition to the free spin rounds I have just described. In case you manage to retrigger free spins, a sticky wild symbol will appear on the grid.

As you can guess from the name, it is a wild symbol that remains in place over the course of your twelve spins, making it much easier to match combinations. Landing at least 1 wild symbol on every reel will provide 5 extra lucrative free spins. A wild line ensures a 333x guaranteed win.

Our Experience with Dead or Alive

Even though I’ve made numerous spins in Dead or Alive back in the day, I’ve still decided to enjoy the classics for the sake of this review.

For my experiment, I entered the game with 200 coins. The idea was to play 200 spins worth 0.9 each to discover the budget I will end up with. So I booted up the Autoplay feature, sat back, and watched the machine spin.

I’ve landed a couple of decent wins throughout these rounds, the best one being 25.50 coins. To my big disappointment, I failed to trigger the free spins. I’m sure it was pretty close, but our chief editor would not likely approve of me playing the game for another hour, so I finished my experiment there.

I ended up 10,50 coins down my initial budget, but I still had a good time playing the original Dead or Alive slot.

Reasons in Favor and Against Playing Dead or Alive

Summing up, I can think of two main reasons why you should play Dead or Alive. If you’re a beginner, the game will be a perfect match for you, as it is very intuitive. It also gives a comfortable introduction to advanced features like wild symbols, scatter symbols, and sticky wilds.

The second reason to try out the Dead or Alive video slot is to simply admire the all-time classic experience. It was a massive hit back in the day, and trying it out today might give you a better perspective on the industry. After all, it is one of the greatest games by one of the most popular software providers.

As for the reasons against playing Dead or Alive, I guess I’ll have to address the elephant in the room. The game is old. It was released in 2009, so its visuals did not age very well, and the mechanics are very basic compared to modern slots. There are tons of fresh alternatives with similar themes or features, and even NetEnt’s sequel to this game provides a much more comprehensive experience.
